Senator Joe Donnelly introduced his first bill on the U.S. Senate floor Thursday.

The Jacob Sexton Military Suicide Prevention Act would establish a pilot program in each branch of the military services. The program would help identify risk factors for mental illness and help our heroes get preventative care before it’s too late.

Last year, nearly 350 service members committed suicide. That’s more than the number of service members who died in combat.

The bill is named in honor of a Farmland, Ind., soldier who took his own life while on leave in 2009.
